dream of domna [2025]

“Time heals,” destroying the material carriers of memory — whether human consciousness or ruins in the forest.
Russian state structures act by similar methods, destroying data about state terror.

In the places of this cleansing — erased political memory — speech arises.
The work models a situation in which a traumatic past is recognized by a subject
from whose language words or entire fragments of their history have been removed.

They were removed by censorship, time, or perhaps they were never there.
As in the expression: “on the tip of the tongue,” speech circles in a mode of wandering along the edges of official history,
leading into a state of hypnotic trance without the possibility of stopping.

The project of 2025, created within the framework of a residency that we conducted in the Komi Republic in 2021. The 3D scans used in the video are casts of the remains of the “Red Stone” camp, now known as “Platform 141 km.” This camp was part of the chain of Gulag labor camps of the unfinished construction of the Transpolar Mainline project (Construction Site 501, the section Chum – Salekhard – Igarka).

* The title of the work refers to a line from the poem “RED STONE” by Lazar Shereshevsky, who was a prisoner of the Gulag and was held in the “Red Stone” camp in 1948 at Construction Site 501

Red Stone — reddish ore

More precious than both mountains and forests,

Proud of its own value,

It refused any vegetation:

It is only stone and water,

Depressions, and protrusions, and shadows,

It is the expectation of labor,

It is dreams of the blast furnace and the open-hearth furnace…

* Blast furnace in Russian is pronounced domna, which has a similar sound to the word dom (home).
